Background of the Study
Pre-colonial trade routes were crucial in shaping the economic and cultural landscapes of many regions, including Abeokuta South. This study explores the archaeological remnants of these ancient networks and their role in facilitating commerce, cultural exchange, and social integration. The trade routes, marked by relics such as coins, pottery, and structural remnants, serve as tangible evidence of historical connectivity between diverse communities (Ogunyemi, 2023). By analyzing the spatial distribution of artifacts and settlement patterns along these routes, the study provides insights into the economic systems and social hierarchies of the pre-colonial era. The investigation also highlights how these trade routes influenced the development of regional identities and fostered intercultural dialogue (Femi, 2024). Interdisciplinary approaches, combining archaeological excavation with historical documentation, are employed to reconstruct the past dynamics of trade and mobility. This reconstruction is essential for understanding the broader socio-economic frameworks that underpinned pre-colonial societies in Ogun State (Adewuyi, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
There is limited empirical research on pre-colonial trade routes in Abeokuta South, leading to gaps in the understanding of their economic and cultural significance. The lack of comprehensive archaeological data hinders the reconstruction of these ancient networks and their influence on local development (Adekunle, 2023). This study addresses this deficiency by systematically mapping and analyzing these trade routes.
